Course Description:
This one-year course introduces the student to the materials area. Students will spend approximately 18 weeks in the Wood Lab and 18 weeks in the Metal Lab, dealing with hand and machine tool operation, safety, and layout. This course involves the use of materials which our district provides. Last year the per student average use for raw material was approximately 7 board feet of lumber, finish, glue and fasteners for the wood component, aluminum round stock, 6013 welding rods, casting aluminum, welding gas and wire, sheet metal and band iron for the metal component.
Objectives: Students will be able to:
A. Prevent accidents by following safe work habits and maintain a clean working environment
B. Demonstrate accurate and appropriate measuring techniques
C. Create 2 dimensional working drawings. Letter and dimension assigned drawings in detail.
D. Accurately Identify , care for and use hand tools
E. Accurately identify, care for and use power tools, portable and stationary.
G. Understand and perform gluing process for cabinet grade materials.
H. Accurately estimate materials.
I. Fabricate using mechanical and chemical fastening methods.
J. Prepare and apply appropriate finish materials to final product.
Grading Procedures:
A = 93-100 B = 85-92 C = 77-84 D = 70-76 F = Below 70
Grading Procedure Percentage Breakdown
Students will be graded on classroom behavior, participation, assignments, activities, quizzes and tests. Actual percentage is student’s total accumulated points.
