Grading Policy/Homework Philosophy

  • Grading Policy

Third grade uses a Standards Based Reporting System.  Assignments and assessments will be aligned to the PA Core Standards and will be assessed with a 4, 3, 2, 1 system.*

4 - Advanced - exceeding grade level expectations
3 - Proficient - independently meeting third grade expectations
2 - Approaching Proficient - able to meet expectations with adaptations and guidance
1 - Not Yet Proficient - unable to meet expectations with adaptations and guidance

*NOTE: Grades that come home will have a number missed at the top in order to provide feedback on all assignments. Standards-specific data can be viewed in the new Sapphire system.

The following Baking Analogy may assist you in understanding how the Standards Based Reporting System works.

4 = Student decided to do something completely different with the cupcake mix and makes a layered birthday cake instead.  The cake has a written saying and candles have been added.  He/she understood the directions but went above and beyond what was asked of them.
3 = Student has the materials and understands how to make and bake cupcakes. The student bakes the cupcakes.
2 = Student has the materials to bake cupcakes but needs some help from someone to get started

0 or 1  = Student has the materials to bake cupcakes but doesn't know what to do with them.

(Thank you, Mrs. Brown, for creating this explanation).

    Make-Up Work

Per district policy, students have 2 days for every day absent to complete missed assignments. Missed work will be completed on or assigned on the day of return unless a parent makes special arrangements to pick up assignments during the time of absence.

    Homework Philosophy

The intention of homework is to practice and reinforce skills taught during the school day. Please help to show your child that school work is important to you by guiding them to set up a time and place for homework in your household, checking his agenda books nightly and by helping him when necessary.
