Dear Parents,

This year our second grade classes will participate in BOOK IT! Reading Incentive Program as a part of the reading we do outside the classroom.  Sponsored by Pizza Hut, this program motivates children to read by rewarding them for their reading accomplishments.  We will also participate in the school-wide Imagine Your Story program.

This is how it works:

• On the first day of each month (October through and including March) your child will bring a Book-It calendar home.  On it is a daily reading goal of 15 minutes four or more times a week.  Record the minutes your child reads each day.  We understand that reading every day may not always be possible.  Your child may read extra on one day if he/she can’t read on another day.  We accept any reading they do and acknowledge his/her effort. 
• On the back is a place to write titles of books read during that month. For the Imagine Your Story program, students count books read.  The yearly goal is 25 books. Students may write their 5 most favorite books read that month. A chapter book can count for multiple books.  Check with your child’s teacher.
• There is a Reading Project Activity each month.  Have your child complete this activity and turn it in with the calendar.
• Students bring the calendar back to school during the first week of the next month with a parent signature at the bottom.  We will give your child a pizza award certificate if the reading minutes goal has been met, good for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza from participating Pizza Hut locations.  There is no purchase required and the pizza can be taken to go.
• When your child achieves the goal of reading 25 books for the Imagine Your Story program, he/she will be eligible for a special activity lead by our reading specialist.
