Lifeguarding Students!During your time away, we want to ensure that we are keeping our skills sharp so that we are able to jump right back into the pool with our skill practice when we return. I am asking that you review chapters 2, 3 and 4 in your American Red Cross Manual and complete the chapter reviews at the end of each chapter. I am also attaching a website I would like you to look through for discussion when we return.I will be available via my email at any time if you have questions. Please feel free to reach out.Stay safe and get outside for some fresh air!-Miss CarlsonGrades 6 and 7 - Please see Mr. Robinson's Schoology page for further instruction.Northern York School District Aquatics Curriculum:The Aquatics Curriculum follows the district's mission statement: "to ensure that all learners are prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow." One of these challenges is the ability to swim. It is our goal to educate students on the importance of water safety, to make sure that each student has the opportunity to learn how to swim and to introduce swimming and water sports as a life long activity. This is a brief overview of the Aquatics Curriculum approved by the Northern York County School Board:Grades 2 and 4:
As part of the Northern York County School District Physical Education curriculum, all students in grades 2 and 4 are scheduled for a series of six consecutive swimming lessons during the fourth marking period. Please check the calendar for your students scheduled class. Students will be bused from their elementary school to the pool which is located in the Northern High School. The students will be accompanied by their classroom teacher. All levels of American Red Cross Instruction are offered, from basic skills through advanced stroke instruction. Our goal is to teach the students to swim and to develop their water safety awareness. Parents are cautioned that swimming skill is no substitute for supervision.
The students will have to bring their own suits and towels to use during the lessons. There are other ways you can help your student during the days they have lessons:
- Have your student dress simply.- Do not let your student wear jewelry to school.
- If your child has long hair, send them to school with their hair tied back.
- All valuables should be left at home.
- Students should NOT bring goggles. All parents and grandparents are invited and encouraged to attend the last class session to observe your child in the pool. Additional information on Parents Day will be sent home with your student.
Grades 6, and 7:
Middle School students walk over to the Natatorium for seven aquatic lessons during the third marking period. The girls come the first half and the boys the second half of the marking period. We encourage students to wear sweatshirts with hoods on them the day they have swimming in case of bad weather.
Grade 6 Aquatics Unit is the American Red Cross Learn to Swim.. The students are broken up into two ability groups.
***Please scroll down to the bottom of this page to view the sixth grade swimming study guide.
Grade 7 is a Basic Canoeing and Water Safety Unit. The students learn and practice basic water safety skills, learn the fundamentals of canoeing and other hazards that one may encounter when boating.

High School Students
Students will take Aquatics as part of their Physical Education Curriculum in High School. Please refer to your students Physical Education Teacher for more information.
Life Skill Classes:
All Life Skill classes come to the Natatorium for swimming. All grade levels receive American Red Cross swimming lessons.
**Please note that for all grade levels, a one piece suit for girls is preferred, but please do not feel like you have to go out and buy a one piece suit for your child's seven classes in the pool. A shirt made out of polyester, nylon or mesh may be worn over your child's two piece suit. Please make sure the suit is NOT cotton, as cotton clogs our filter. We have extra shirts here at the pool.
It is the Aquatics Department goal that all students be prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, whether on land or in the water!
