    Marking Period 1: fiction skills--recounting, asking/answering questions, making inferences, character traits, and vocabulary strategies

    Marking Period 2: nonfiction skills--main idea, asking/answering questions, text features, comparing and contrasting two texts on the same topic, and vocabulary strategies

    Marking Period 3: fiction skills--theme, asking/answering questions, identifying point of view, comparing and contrasting two texts with similar characters, and vocabulary strategies

    Marking Period 4: main idea, asking/answering questions, text structues, explaining author's point of view, comparing and contrasting two texts on the same topic, and vocabulary strategies

    Writing

    September: We will learn about the writing workshop process and how to be stronger, more intentional writers. 

    October-November: We will learn about the different types of narrative writing and write a fictional narrative as well as a personal narrative. The focus will be on being detailed writers with strong word choice. 

    December-January: Students will learn about opinion/persuasive writing. We will pay particularly close attention to supporting our thoughts with strong reasons/evidence, using specific persuasive techniques to strengthen them even further. 

    February: We will read, write, and analyze a wide range of poetry. 

    March-May: Our final unit will be informational writing. The students will learn how to write about a topic that they are very familiar with.

    Science

    Unit 1: Structures of Life

    In this unit we will study seeds, germination, and the life cycle of plants and animals. We will also learn about the skeletal system and muscular system. This unit includes live crayfish and looking at owl pellets!

    Unit 2: Water and Climate

    This unit the focus is all on the characteristics of water as well as weather. We will collect weather data from our own school yard!

    Unit 3: Motion and Matter

    The final unit is all about how different materials interact and move in the world.
