• Use this as a guide to help you understand how your child's English Language Arts instruction will be set up this year. Feel free to contact me with any questions as they come up.

    FREQUENCY:
Students have 80 minutes of a Core ELA (English Language Arts) Block with me daily. In addition, students will have 40 minutes of writing with their homeroom teacher.

    INSTRUCTIONAL TIME:
Most days, students will do a blend of Shared Reading, Independent Reading, and Guided Reading. This means they'll be getting instruction as a whole group, practicing skills independently with their own texts, and receiving smaller group instruction with me to check for understanding, provide additional help and/or enrichment as needed. We focus on fiction for marking periods 1 and 2, and non-fiction for marking periods 3 and 4.

    WORD WORK:
Students will be completing a word study program that focuses on spelling patterns, as well as Greek and Latin word parts to help them with spelling and decoding skills. Each student will receive a list based on his/her individual needs as a speller/reader approximately once a cycle. Please note, this is different than a traditional spelling program, and students won't be asked to memorize lists.

    GRADING:
Students will be assessed through conversations during small groups, assignments, assessments, and periodic benchmark testing. Students should assume that everything they turn in could be graded! :)

Please contact me with any questions! I look forward to working with you this year!
