Mrs. Lum

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Northern Middle School

I have been teaching at Northern Middle School since 1993, first as a 7th grade inclusion teacher and now as a resource room teacher.  I provide English and Reading instruction to  seventh and eighth grade students. Additionally I provide intensive supplemental Readinginstruction with small groups of students to all three grades.

I believe that learning is a lifelong pursuit and I continue to broaden my knowledge and skills. I invest heavily in my own education and I earned a number of degrees. My bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education and Special Education.  I earned my first Master of Education (M. Ed.) degree with a specialty in Learning Disabilities and a concentration in Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities.  I earned my second M. Ed. with a certification as a Reading Specialist. Additionally,  I have pursued specialized training in Reading intructional methods that include multisensory strategies.

I live in the Mechanicsburg area with my husband and my middle school aged son.   In my spare time you can find me reading, hiking, scrapbooking  or cooking up a storm in my kitchen.  Recently I have taken an interest in kayaking and hope to spend more time in the summer hitting the water.

Mrs. Printz and Mrs. Wolfe are the Learning Support Instructional Aides that work alongside of me to ensure your child's success.   The ways we provide support to your student may include teaching organizational strategies, providing in-class support, teaching study strategies and various other accommodations we employ to facilitate your student being successful.

My Goals for the students

My first goal this year is to assist your child in formulating and achieving his/her personal academic goals.

My second goal is to assist your child in becoming better students, readers and writers.

My third goal is to empower your child to be a lifelong learner through learning how to be a collaborator,        communicator, critical thinker and using creativity.

Please feel free to contact me via phone, email or a note in your student's agenda book.  I look forward to being part of a team cheering your child on to academic success.
