Course Description
The 8th grade physical science course provides an exciting, varied opportunity to challenge a student’s understanding of how the world around them works. This course offers a multitude of hands-on lab explorations, traditional notes and the incorporation of using technology to construct their knowledge.
Students will be introduced to new concepts as well as continuing to construct a deeper understanding of familiar concepts.
The first half of the course explores matter and related concepts. Topics studied include density, gas laws and an in-depth investigation of the common states of matter.
Simple machines are re-visited from previous years, including calculating the mechanical advantage gained by employing them.
We will probe the smallest building blocks of matter through our study of the atom and explore relationships between atoms in our inquiry of the Periodic Table.
Finally, in our energy unit, the students will select, research, and present an energy-related topic that gives each student the opportunity to become the teacher as they will explain their findings to their classmates.
