Aquatics

  • Aquatics Unit in Grades 6 and 7:

6th and 7th grade middle school students walk over to the Natatorium for seven aquatic lessons during the 3rd marking period.  The girls come the first half of the marking period and the boys the second half.  We encourage students to wear sweatshirts with hoods, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves the day they have swimming in case of bad weather.

Grade 6 does American Red Cross swimming.  Each student at the beginning of the unit does a water screening test (jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim one length of the pool doing the freestyle or front crawl stroke).  This test determines what ability group they will be in.  If the student does not pass the water screening test, they will continue with American Red Cross swimming lessons in the shallow end of the pool (they will retake the screening again at the end of the unit to see the progress made) while the students who pass the water screening test will work on more complex swimming strokes in the deep end of the pool.

Grade 7 has a Basic Canoeing and Water Safety Unit.  The students learn and practice basic water safety skills, learn the fundamentals of canoeing, and other hazards that one may encounter when boating.
