Grading Policies

  • Students' grades in my class are calculated using a pure points approach so that each student can easily calculate his/her average if they keep track of the assignments I return to them. The relative importance of assignments is designated by point value. APPROXIMATE point values are as follows;

    Tests = 100 pts, Quizzes = 20 to 50 pts, Lab Activities = 20 to 30 pts, Lab Reports = 50 to 60 pts Homework = 5 to 20 pts, Special Projects = As Announced

    Make Up Work - According to School Policy, students are allowed about 1 day per day of absence to make up missed work. Any work missed due to an UNEXCUSED absence will be penalized with a 20% deduction.

    Late Assignments - Students in Chem I are allowed ONE late assignment per marking period. This late assignment may be up to one week late and must be accompanied by an "Official Certificate." All other late assignments will receive a grade of zero. AP Chemistry students must complete all assignments by the scheduled due date.

    Cheating, Copying & Plagiarism - These shortcuts will not be tolerated and will result in penalties as outlined in the course syllabus.

    Team Work - About 15-25% of a student's grade is determined by assignments completed as a member of a team. Students are encouraged to fulfill specified roles within the team and to complete work on a timeline which allows their teammates to review and edit their work. As teams abide by prescribed teamwork guidelines, the team will produce a better assignment than any individual could, and ALL students' grades will benefit.

    Extra Credit - Students are offered one opportunity each marking period to complete an optional project for extra credit. See syllabus for details.
