Gifted Seminar
Gifted Seminar engages students in a variety of activities, involving multiple intelligences. Creativity, divergent thinking, and personal growth are areas of focus as we explore topics that students don’t typically encounter in their regular education courses.
Examples of lessons include:
- Creating a 4-D object
- Reading and discussing an article on Earth’s 6th mass extinction
- Listening to and analyzing the lyrics of “Changes” by David Bowie
- Debating the ethical dilemmas of self driving cars
- Expressing emotions through clay
- Researching influential athletes in history
Students who choose to attend gifted seminar will meet once per cycle earn credit toward graduation.
This is a participation based class. A student's grade each marking period is based on adequate completion of assigned tasks, and their level of participation within our discussions.
Starting in the fall of 2020 a virtual gifted seminar class is also an option.
Competitions
Click the competitions link on the left to learn more information about each of the competitions that are offered through the gifted program at the high school level. Students are required to follow all deadlines provided by Mrs. Marakovits for their competition(s) of choice.
Independent Study
A student may choose to work with the gifted support teacher and a regular education teacher to design and complete a substantial academic related task in an area of their interest. This is a great opportunity for a student to complete a complex project or explore a topic in depth beyond that of which time provides in the regular education classroom. Students selecting this option must be self-motivated and good self-advocates. Students will develop tasks that align with their interests and abilities. They may also choose to work on a project with another student. Credit for an independent study is determined on a case by case basis. All students pursing an independent study must complete a pre-project contract and turn in a parent signed form before beginning their project.
Push In To Regular Ed. Classes
Students seeking to be challenged further in the day to day lessons within their regular education classrooms may benefit from supplemental enrichment materials. Others may be seeking to improve a specific focus area such as grammar or mechanics within their writing. The gifted support teacher will work with students individually to determine if setting a core content goal may be appropriate. Career focused goals, based off of the Career Education and Work I Statements for 9-12 Grade, are also an option.
Book Study
Using the book "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" by Heather Morris, students will have the opportunity to write reflectively, and engage in philosophical discussions that connect historical people and events with modern day .
Students in the gifted program are always welcome to come from study hall to room 209 to work on homework assignments or study, read, attempt crazy puzzles and brain teasers, talk with Mrs. Marakovits, or interact with like minded peers.
