Homework is given in order for students to review the concepts, skills, and strategies they learned in school. Please know that I rarely assign homework. Why? I would much rather your little one be curled up with a juicy text OR playing an engaging math game (sent home by the teacher) with other family & friends.
What We Do in Room 103

Math Toolkits: Please know math toolkits are sent home from time-to-time with games, cards, and so on. I find students engaging in math tasks, puzzles, and games so much more meaningful than completing a worksheet.
Reading BINGO/BOOK IT: I am excited to announce this year students will participate in a monthly Reading Bingo! I know many of my students are involved in extra school activities, so I wanted reading at home to be both enjoyable & realistic to your schedules! BINGO provides you the opportunity to ensure your child is reading on nights that fit your schedule.
How it works:
From September-May students will be given a bingo card. Due dates will be written on the bingo card. For every 5 activities completed, students receive $2 in Disney Dollars. For a BLACKOUT card (all activities completed) students will receive $50 in Disney Dollars in addition to a Pizza Hut Coupon. *Directions are stated on each bingo card. Pizza Hut Coupons are available from October-March.
Homework is meant to be a tool for learning! If your child is struggling with a particular problem or assignment, feel free to reach out to me. Providing feedback is an excellent opportunity for me to adapt future instruction in order to best fit your child's needs. msnyder@nycsd.k12.pa.us
Should a homework worksheet be assigned please read below:
Although homework is not graded, it gives students the opportunity to assess their own understanding. Again, homework is practice for the child & an opportunity for YOU to see what is happening in the classroom. Students may receive up to 30 minutes of homework per night. All of the assignments will directly correlate to the content learned during that school day. When completing homework, please assist your child as needed. When learning something new, it is vital your child is actively engaged in the task at hand. Make homework time a positive experience, void of any distractions. Things to know:
1. Homework is checked & recorded for completion by the teacher. Should a concern come up regarding repeated incomplete assignments, a parent/guardian will be reached.
2. Homework is reviewed either whole or small group. It is usually not collected by the teacher to mark (see below); therefore, students are responsible for checking over their work when it is reviewed the next day. Parents/Guardians: You will know if we reviewed homework by a "star" at the top of the page.
3. On rare occasions something special may come up limiting our amount of time to review homework. Should homework not be reviewed, students should turn it into the inbox.
