Welcome to my LA class! I'll fill you in on a secret, reading makes my heart want to burst! I look forward to venturing through various literature and informational pieces to learn about the world around us. In my classroom, we will explore articles, magazines, short stories, and chapter books. Therefore, be sure to ask your child what he/she is reading in class!

Reader's Workshop: Specific days will be assigned to focus on reader's workshop. We will focus on, as an entire class, a certain reading skill to help refine our reading skills. Students will then be given the opportunity to read a personal book or pre selected text and complete a daily focus skill activity.

Book Studies: Throughout the school year we will read a few chapter books and participate in reading club groups and discussions. The purpose of a novel study is to make meaningful conversation and discoveries about a text! Students will participate in both a shared reading (teacher reads with students and equally share facilitating the discussion) experience and a small guided group intervention (the teacher guides students through an activity to enhance an already learned concept).

R.E.A.D. Workshop/Centers: On a weekly basis students will have the opportunity to refine their grammar, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and reading skills through center work. These centers involve hands-on, fully engaged learning. Your child is expected to stay on task and complete the activity.

Literature Circles: Students will also participate in literature groups. After given either an assigned reading or reading of choice, students become the teachers! That's right,  during this special time each student has an important role and must report back to his/her group to share his/her findings. These roles are: adventuring artist, word wizard, literary luminary, and discussion director.

Writer's Workshop: Students will be given the opportunity to practice and refine their writing skills every day. We will begin by examining the process of writing and discussing what a writer's workshop looks and sounds like. This year we will be working on writing narratives, persuasive pieces, poetry, responding to short writing prompts, and informational pieces.
