Principles of Engineering

  • Welcome to Principles of Engineering

Principles of Engineering (POE) is the second foundation course in the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Pathway To Engineering course sequence.  Students are encouraged to take POE before taking specialization engineering courses at NHS.  The engineering design process that we learned in IED will also be used in this and subsequent NHS engineering courses.

POE introduces students to the physical sciences behind the mathematical models we use in engineering design.  We explore the theory behind the mathematical models and then build physical models to apply those theories.  After successfully completing POE, students are able to take specialization engineering courses at NHS.  Currently we offer Civil Engineering and Architecture as a specialization course in our engineering pathway.

There is no textook for POE.  We will generally use two online resources for class activities, assignments, and communication:
    1. Schoology will be used to distribute course materials, for students to submit assignments, and for student/teacher communication.  To use this site, navigate to NYCSD Schoology and log in with your @northernpolarbears.com email account.
    2. PLTW's courses site contains PLTW specific course content.  You must be logged in to this site to access any protected PLTW content.  You will be assigned a username and password to access this site at https://my.pltw.org/login

We will spend time in class at the beginning of the year learning how to use these tools effectively.
